Bloody Mary Recipe

The Bloody Mary is one of the few cocktails that can be served any time of day! Breakfast, lunch or dinner, this classic Bloody Mary recipe made with vodka, tomato and lemon juice and just a splash of zest and spice is the perfect adult beverage.

Some people add horseradish (yum!) and salt to the recipe, or garnish with lemon, but this is simply the classic version version of a Bloody Mary. I swear it is the only drink you can identify just from the garnish.

If you are looking for a versatile adult beverage that can truly be enjoyed at any point in time during the day, I have got the perfect Bloody Mary recipe for you. Not only are Bloody Mary’s packed full of some key healthy nutrients (hello, tomato juice!), they’re also quite delicious as well. If you are anything like me, you might prefer a little bit of spice to accompany your drink. And in my mind, the spicier the better. I always like to add a bit of pepper, and a dash (or two!) Tabasco sauce to really take my Bloody Mary to another level. Is it possible to ever get a Bloody Mary too spicy? My answer is no, but your taste buds may disagree.

The great thing about making this Bloody Mary recipe is that it is super simple and easy to make. It’s literally composed of 3 main ingredients with the addition of a few others that are varying “garnishes”. It makes you wonder exactly who tried that original trio of vodka, tomato juice, and lemon juice? Who knew it would be so awesome?

And to make yourself feel really healthy when drinking this beverage, make certain to remember to add your celery garnish as well. Who says you can’t have your drink and your veggies all at once?

The Zombie Cocktail is probably the strongest drink I have ever made or tried! Because of the high alcohol content, the drink can be lit. The 151 rum burns very well!!

If you are going to light this drink, I’d do it outside and be very, very careful with the fire. Practice all known fire safety strategies as supplied by your local fire department.

This is what the Zombie Cocktail looks like unlit. Pretty benign, right? But in this case looks are deceiving! This packs a real wallop! The story goes that the Zombie Cocktail was so named due to the effect the beverage had on its original consumer!

While a lovely drink, I have to admit the Zombie Cocktail Recipe is a bit too strong for me!

Classic Mai Tai Cocktail Recipe

The classic Mai Tai is a rum based drink, perfect for sipping on a sandy beach or poolside in your own backyard. In case you were wondering what that is inside the Mai Tai, it is the shell of half of the lime you squeezed to make the Mai Tai!

Victor Bergron, aka Trader Vic created the Mai Tai in 1944:

Then one day in 1944, a bit of serendipity happened that would place The Trader at the forefront of rum-soaked cocktail mixology earning him a place in history. He pulled down a bottle of 17-year-old Jamaican Rum from the bar, added a squeeze of lime, a dash of rock candy syrup, a splash of orange curacao, some French orgeat, and poured the concoction over cracked ice. He handed it to a friend who immediately exclaimed, “It’s Mai Tai Roa Ae!” (Tahitian for “Out of this world – the best!”), and the first Mai Tai was born – Paradise In A Glass™.

Original Mai Tai Recipe

• 2 ounces 17-year-old J. Wray & Nephew Rum
• ½ ounce French Garnier Orgeat Syrup
• ½ ounce Holland DeKuyper Orange Curacao
• ¼ ounce Rock Candy Syrup
• juice from one fresh lime

• Hand shake and garnish with half of the lime shell inside the drink and float a sprig of fresh mint at the edge of the glass.

Notes

• The 17-year-old J. Wray & Nephew Rum is considered the world’s most expensive rum. For a cool $55,000, you could own one of the last remaining bottles in the world. Read the story here. Described as a a golden medium-bodied Jamaican from Kingston known for its purity and age it is unlikely you can make a true “classic” Mai Tai these days. So, use a nice golden Rum from Jamaica!

• I have made Orgeat. It is a fairly involved process. Click here for How to Make Homemade Orgeat instructions. In my opinion, you are better off buying it from Amazon.

• Instead of orange Curaçao, you can use triple sec or Cointreau.

• Simple syrup is similar to rock candy syrup, being made from exactly the same thing as each other, sugar and water. Simple syrup is water saturated with sugar. Rock candy syrup is water supersaturated with sugar. To learn how to make Rock Candy Syrup, Click here. There is no way I could explain it as well. Truly a fabulous tutorial.

• My drink recipe just used Simple Syrup instead of Rock Candy Syrup.

• In case you were wondering what that is inside the Mai Tai, it is the shell of half of the lime you squeezed to make the Mai Tai!

• It may be easier for you to place the place empty squeezed fresh lime into a highball cocktail glass before adding the ice.

• Note that you can, and should, add ice to the drink. Pour your cocktail over ice.
