Strawberry Lemonade Jello Shots Recipe

Jello shots are a very popular party “drink”. Everywhere you turn someone has a Jello shot recipe. But, in a bit of irony, most “Jello” shot recipes are not made with “Jello” (Kraft) at all… they are made with unflavored gelatin, usually Knox (Unilever) or store brand. The Jello shots made with unflavored gelatin rely on the liquor for the taste.

This Jello shot recipe is using flavored Jell-O and lemonade (instead of water) for the flavor. This is a vodka jello shot recipe. Since vodka is pretty flavorless, it is easy to assign a taste to it (look at all the flavored vodkas out these days). That makes vodka the perfect liquor to use with real Jell-O.

Usually, Jello shots are made in Souffle Cup with Lids for transport, or in shot glasses (which allows for rimming the Jello shot). But sometimes, you may want something a little more “interesting” to be the vessel.

Citrus rinds are very common, very easy to make, vessels to hold a Jello shot. While this strawberry lemonade Jello shot recipe uses lemons, if the Jello shot was compatible, you could use limes, oranges, or grapefruits. You could also use a personal watermelon (even though it will be cut down, look for the smallest one possible! Yes, people use large watermelons, but that party better be HUGE to consume all that!). I’ve seen people make Jello shots in large strawberries, hollowed out apples… just about any fruit where you can create a holding vessel that will not lose its shape can be used to hold a Jello shot.

Strawberry Lemonade Jello Shots Ingredients:

Strawberry Lemonade Jello Shots Mise en Place:

Note:

• This uses green apple gelatin which can be difficult to find. Another choice is lime gelatin or melon fusion gelatin, and swap out the apple schnapps for more rum (or Midori!)

• If you don’t have green apple schnapps in the house, Crown Royal apple is a nice substitute.

While researching gelatin shots recipes, I spent some time on the Knox gelatin page, and the read is fascinating. It is the largest distributor of gelatin selling 60% for home and institutional usage, and 40% to industrial and manufacturing. Knox really took off after the owner died and his wife took over the company. If you have a few minutes, give it a read. I learned some things (the first gelcap in the 1920s!), and you may too.

Jello Shots are pretty easy to make. This is the basic recipe anyone can follow:

• 1 small box of Flavored Gelatin (there are others with unflavored Gelatin, but this is the basics)
• 1 cup water, boiling
• 1 cup of: vodka/rum/tequila/whiskey/schnapps/liqueurs

The 1 cup of some sort of spirits is the key. The different flavor combinations of alcoholic beverages combined with the flavored gelatin are what makes the tasty jello shot varieties.

A great Halloween party jello shot, these Purple People Eater Jello Shots are easy to make and taste great!

Notes:

• Make sure you add the food coloring after you have allowed the gelatin mixture to set up for 10 minutes (so it is not super-hot), but before you add the liquor. So many problems are avoided when you do it this way!
• The color order does not matter – these are green, purple, black. You can do black, green, purple or purple, black, green… whatever you like.
• When you fill the final 24 with black rum gelatin, make sure you fill all the cups at least a little bit and then go back and top them off. There is enough liquid to fill them all, but it works better for the final layer to do a little, and then top off.
• These are strong. The tequila really gives a kick. If you are not a tequila fan, use more apple or rum or substitute vodka.

This recipe originally called for green apple jello. Try finding it. I had no luck, so totally remade the recipe with flavors that are accessible to all.

The original recipe is:

• 1 box green apple jello + 1 cup green apple schnapps
• 1 box grape jello + 1 cup rum
• 1 box unflavored gelatin + 1 cup water

You could also use this combination:

• 1 box melon fusion jello + 1 cup Midori
• 1 box grape jello + 1 cup tequila
• 1 box clear jello + 1 cup vodka
